Today is another weigh-in. We have just finished a week in North Myrtle Beach and today we travel home. The scale is an ever-present reminder that dieting is not easy but all things are possible.
Last Sunday we were looking at the failure cycle. We are using a couple of verses in James to see how this failure cycle works. “14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death” (James 1:14-15).
The failure cycle works like this:
Temptation = food triggers
Lust enticed = craving
Lust conceived = binge
Brings forth sin = diet failure
Sin finished = guilt, depression, weight gain
Temptation is all around us dieters. Temptation is something that will happen. We can minimize it somewhat by not having any trigger foods in our pantries. That means when we pass through the grocery store we must remain on guard. It means we must not purchase anything that will satisfy a craving. We know what those foods are. They are different for each person. It might be salty carbs such as potato chips, pretzels, crackers, and salted nuts just to mention a few, or it might be sugar laden carbs, such as cakes, cookies, candy, and donuts.
If you let the cycle get past the craving level, it’s over. You are no longer on the diet.
Next time we will look at the temptation a little more.
