Diets are for those who are thick and tired of it. ~Mary Tyler Moore. My hope is that people will diet long before they get sick. Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue caused by overeating and a lack of self-control. It is a chronic, progressive disease. The body mass index (BMI) is one measure used to define overweight and obesity. The formula for figuring BMI is Weight is pounds divided by Height in inches squared and this value multiplied by 705 (BMI= [(lbs/in2) x 705]). We have a calculator on the website to figure it for you. Overweight is 25-29.9, obesity is 30-34.9, and there are several classes of severe obesity above that. Though BMI has some limitations especially for athletes, it is a good health indicator. Being overweight or obese itself causes weight gain. Obesity changes the biology of the body in a manner that favors further weight gain and obesity. So, Mary Tyler Moore may have been using a play on words, but it is seriously true. The thick will get sick and tired.
