My HMO says we should walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. That not only burns a few calories, it energizes the metabolism and helps prevent many ills. Walking is one of the easiest things we can do. Plus it’s cheap. We have a walking trail nearby and we walked it the other day when it wasn’t raining and wasn’t too hot. We also walk with Leslie and get in some walking while still in our living room. The amount of calories burned are roughly 100 per mile for a 180-pound person and 65 for a 120-pound person. The CalorieKing website not only has a database of most foods, it tells you how long you have to walk in order to burn off the calories of a food. A Big Mac ,for example, is 540 calories. They say it takes 141 minutes of walking to burn it off—that’s about 2 hours and 20 minutes of walking to use the equivalent number of calories. That’s a lot of walking. My advice: don’t eat the Big Mac. An 8-ounce chicken breast still takes 69 minutes to walk off. So get in your walking to help your weight loss deficit and to help your body’s fitness level.
