If you are counting calories, doing the math may help: a pound is about 3,500 calories, so if you can cut 100 calories out of your day, you will lose a pound in just over a month. What? One pound a month? I’ve got 50 pounds to lose. It would be four times that to lose a pound in a week. From this illustration you can see that unless you only have a couple of pounds to lose, you are going to have to cut more than 100 calories a day. That’s what weight loss dieting is all about. Experts say that losing 1 to 2 pounds a week is a safe weight loss. That means cutting 3,500 to 7,000 calories a week. That is about 500 to 1,000 calories per day. The diet we are on expects about 3 pounds a week loss. That’s about 10,500 calories cut per week. No wonder no one wants to go on a diet when it’s said that way. If I use the BMR calculator on this website there on the right side, it says I need 1,624 calories just to meet my basic calorie needs. So I have to up my needs by walking or exercising in order to drop that many calories. The body will make up any deficit by going to its fat storage, at least that’s the hope. That’s how we lose weight. But the body still needs a minimum input in order to stay healthy. This is getting complicated.
