We are about a week into the summer of 2012. It’s starting to get hot like a normal summer should. We had the longest day and now each day becomes shorter. Exercising outside is more difficult. With the humidity, even an early walk is uncomfortable. Is exercise supposed to be comfortable? Aren’t you supposed to sweat and soak your shirt before you’re done?
If someone told you that you needed to exercise 130 hours, you would probably say “ya right.” How could I exercise that much.” That’s how much you will exercise at 30 minutes per day and 5 days a week for a year. Okay, that’s not so bad. But I’m going to have to figure out a way to walk in the summer heat.
I live a ways from the nearest mall, so mall walking isn’t a good option. I like walking the malls. On some of our travels, we find a mall to walk when it’s raining and stormy. Some malls we have visited are rather small and others are huge. Depending on the time of day, they could be crowded and it’s difficult to get any good walking in.
Heat also drains me. I don’t feel like getting my 130 hours in. I don’t have funds for a big gym that has a walking track, which is a good option for those who like to walk in air-conditioned comfort. Hiking in the North Georgia Mountains or the Great Smokey’s isn’t a great option. You have to carry plenty of water and take shorter hikes.
Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. Except I have found that heat is harder on my body than when I was younger. I have to choose my hikes more carefully and the distances I use to hike are just too long. That’s the summer for you. To get your 130 hours in, you are going to have to find something. We can’t just wait until fall. Then the winter. We can’t walk in the winter. Don’t worry. I’ll figure it out. Wisdom comes with age they say.
