Diet experts urge dieters to use a reward system. When you reach a certain goal, you should reward yourself. Some say that just losing the weight is reward enough. That is certainly a positive part of weight management. After all, losing the weight is the goal. However, should there be rewards along the journey? Or should there also be penalties for not reaching the goal?
Companies are using real money and sometimes penalties as incentives for workers to get in better shape. When I worked, our company had a wellness plan and there were weekly activities that added up points. The winners received cash or gift cards. I didn’t get first place but I was in the top five. I did receive a gift card. The problem in this program was there was too big a loophole for cheating.
God uses the reward system. Here are three verses that show God has reward incentives.
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:24
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. 1 Corinthians 3:8
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6
How many of us are looking for God’s rewards? Not many. I’ve even heard people say, if I just get a little tent in the corner of heaven I’ll be happy. But Jesus says He’s preparing mansions. I’ve heard people say that since heaven is so tall, that the higher up God assigns you, the greater your reward. I don’t know if there is any biblical proof for that, but we do know God is a rewarder, both here and in heaven.
We will look into the whole idea of rewards this week.
