So it was Sunday morning and I was going over my Sunday sermon, when I got a call. The man began with the statement, “Will I go to hell if I commit suicide?” Well that caught my attention real quick. As I began questioning this person, I found out he was over 500 pounds and according to him it was a medical condition which didn’t allow him to lose weight very easy. In fact, according to him it was near impossible. He had been everywhere in his attempt to lose weight. The biggest problem for him was church people. One Sunday when he sat down in church, the chair collapsed. He said everyone laughed. They would call him names and berate him for not losing weight. All the time, according to him, he couldn’t lose weight. To these religious folk, his weight appeared as something evil. Their thinking was after all no Christian should weigh that much. Their conclusion was that he was undisciplined, lazy, and was obviously overeating which according to them is a sin. He was rather fed up with church and churchgoers. I can’t blame him. The church of all places has to be a safe place for everyone. And profiling a heavy person as evil just has no place in the grace economy of God. Appearances are not the whole story.
