“The increasing amount of time that people spend using computers, playing video games, and watching TV is a major factor in rising rates of obesity worldwide, according to a new study. The researchers at the Milken Institute in California found a direct link between spikes in adoption of new information and communications technology and the dramatic rise in obesity in 27 countries between 1988 and 2009.”
I’m not sure who has to pay for these studies, but this one is just to affirm what everyone knows. The more you sit the more you gain weight. In the early days, people mostly walked and didn’t travel anywhere. Today we ride everywhere. It goes with technology. SCI FI movies would show the “evolved” society nothing more than a head with a big eye and two big ears.
Now they have documented proof that sitting too much causes obesity. To combat this known problem the gym was born. Although schools had gymnasiums, the local fitness gym came into being around 1965 when Gold’s gym appeared on the scene. We would have to do something to keep from turning into a head with a big eye.
Instead of walking to work, we would have to work at walking. Still the best and most original form of exercise, walking would have to make a comeback. William Staub invented the first treadmill in the late 60’s. It has become a staple in the gym. Now we can walk and run without going anywhere. Jack has a treadmill, which is seldom if ever used. Shame on you Jack.
There are plenty of clubs today designed to get like people moving. There are running, hiking, jogging, and biking clubs whose mission is to get people off the couch and out moving. There are even things to get you moving if you just stand up in front of the couch. The Wii, as well as other game stations, has enabled us to play all manner of sports and not even leave the house. Jack doesn’t have any of those.
We know the problem; we just have to implement one of many solutions. You don’t want to end up as a head with a big eye do you?
