Swear off fad diets. This is a tip from Jillian Michaels. A fad diet is a diet that promises quick weight loss through what is usually an unhealthy and unbalanced diet. Fad diets target people who want to lose weight quickly without exercise. Some fad diets claim that they make you lose fat but it’s really water weight you’re losing. “Most fad diets go something like this: Take a few foods, give them ‘magic’ power, and set a plan to convince people that eating this way and only this way will promote weight loss,” says Alexandra Caspero, RD, a nutritionist based in Sacramento, Calif. The extreme fad diets are the most problematic. When you only eat one thing, you know it’s not going to go well; for example, the cabbage diet, the cookie diet, the baby food diet, the grapefruit diet, the raw diet, and countless others. Other diets just have no science behind them such as the body type diet, the blood type diet, the alkaline diet, and others. Most of the popular diets are on the lists of fad diets. None of them are manageable for the long haul—and they wreak havoc with your metabolism because you’re either starving yourself or you’re cutting out a major food group! So stay away from fad diets as best you can.
