“And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.” Proverbs 23:2
This seems like a rather severe suggestion coming from the Bible. Course we can’t take this literally and live. It just shows how serious overeating is.
Because of its vivid and extreme image, we just overlook it. We chuckle and kidding make a sweeping motion with our finger across our throats. The picture is vivid because it is important. Jesus often used these extreme illustrations to make a point. “And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out.” (Matthew 5:29) “And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off.” (Matthew 5:30)
When you see an extreme measure in scripture, we need to take a careful look at it. If appetite controls you, then take some kind of extreme measure to control it—like a diet. That seems extreme to me.
To me, putting a knife to your throat simply means quit eating too much. First, food has control over you. You recognize this and make extreme effort to change control. You can say that you have a food addiction and it often controls you. Your food decides what you eat rather than you making a good choice.
I visited a bakery the other day. I really like pastries cooked in the bakery. The smell just ignites my taste buds. I remember when I was young I would be out delivering papers by five in the morning. There was a bakery on my paper route. Though they weren’t open, the baker-owner would allow me to come in the back door and buy day old pastries for a nickel. I would get two or three donuts, or cinnamon rolls to eat while I delivered papers. Therefore, I’m hooked on bakery goods. The other day I bought an Apple Fritter. I did share some of it with Charlene. I would have been better off controlling the circumstances and just buying the cup of coffee.
Second, when faced with temptation, we need to take control at that moment. Take extreme action. It might mean grabbing your coffee and leaving rather than sitting there looking at and savoring the smells of all the pastries. It might mean saying no. That’s a hard thing to do when you smell those delicious delicacies.
To be a successful weight loser it means take drastic steps when needed.
