Kidney beans get their name from their shape because it is shaped like a kidney. They hold their shape well during cooking and easily absorb flavors of seasonings. They are especially good in simmered dishes. In case you think all kidney beans are ‘red’, there are some that are white in color and those are called cannellini beans.
Kidney beans are referred to as “common beans” (pinto beans, navy beans and black beans) probably due to the fact that they all derived from a common bean ancestor that originated in Peru. Indian traders and later on Spanish traders/explorers then brought the kidney bean as well as other beans to South and Central America, gradually working their way around the world.
The multiple health benefits across the board for the various types of bean are pretty much the same. Suffice it to say, beans are good for you. They include essential proteins, minerals, fiber, and vitamins for your daily health. Enough said?
