Last week we asked the question “Does God care if we are overweight?” We saw that He cares for what we care about and has provided a way to bring those cares to Him.
Look at this verse. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NKJV). This almost sounds like Jesus is talking about the overweight—heavy person.
Okay, that might seem a stretch, but when applying the Word to everyday life it isn’t such a stretch. The words “heavy laden” are from a Greek word meaning “burden.” Anyone who is overweight knows they are carrying a burden.
If you ever watch The Biggest Loser, they have one segment in their challenges after they have lost a considerable amount of weight, where they have a race and they have to carry the amount of weight they have lost. Some of them have to carry 100 pounds or more. They quickly see what carrying around all that weight was really like. It was truly being heavy laden.
If you need to lose 50 pounds, put 50 pounds in a backpack and see how heavy that is. That weight is pressing down on joints and causing tendons and ligaments to work harder than normal. Weight is a heavy burden on the body.
