Gladys Louise Smith, known professionally as Mary Pickford, was a Canadian-American motion picture actress, writer, director and producer and gave this profound truth: “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.” I’m not sure she was speaking specifically to ‘dieting’ or life in general, but we can certainly see where it applies to dieting. You’ve been there, I’m sure, where you have high hopes in starting a ‘new diet’, certain that this one will take you to your goal. But somewhere along the line, you’ve fallen down. Some might say you’ve failed. Everyone has obstacles when dieting and working on getting healthier. If you let the occasional falling-down times outweigh the progress and hope for your future, then you’re doing what Mary Pickford said is failure: the staying down. Don’t let momentary lapses undermine your progress. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on track. You can make it as long as you don’t stay down.
