18If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 19Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 20And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. Overeating or gluttony had severe consequences in the Old Testament times. It was part of a rebellious lifestyle condemned by God. It’s a good thing we aren’t under that law. The dictionary defines gluttony as excess in eating or drinking. The dictionary defines “excess” as “undue or immoderate indulgence.”
When it comes to eating, gluttony is eating excess food resulting in a weight gain. I say that because excess food doesn’t help the body, it hurts the body. We need a certain amount of fat, but excess is a result of gluttony or overeating. The conclusion is that any weight over our normal amount is a result of gluttony.
That sounds harsh, but truth hurts as they say. There might be a small percentage of people where that is true. Medication can cause weight gain. Certain diseases can cause a gain in weight. It’s a very small percentage. The rest of us got fat from overeating.
We can make it a command or a rule. Don’t over eat or be guilty of gluttony. We are not under the guilt of law because of the finished work of Jesus. So His grace then says you are free to eat only what you need because God gives you the power to overcome gluttony.
Let’s not look at gluttony as a law, but as a gift God has given us to protect our health. He didn’t design us to carry excess weight. He has given us instructions on how to maintain a healthy body. God is always for us. He gives commands and instructions to protect us and give us health and longevity. One of those instructions is to not eat more than your body needs to function normally.
