Food is fuel, not therapy. I wrote on this some time ago but I didn’t address the idea of therapy. I suggested that food is more than fuel but not therapy in the sense that we would use food to help us cope with something. Food is not a coping mechanism although many use it as such. For some it is the only method to soothe depressed feelings and emotions. Food is celebration and joy related, not depression or sadness related. If you are eating food to help with some issue you are having, then first address the issue. If it is a relationship issue, for example, work on the relationship. Don’t sit at home on the couch feeling sorry for yourself and eating ice cream to soothe the emotion. Food is not for therapy. If you eat for no apparent reason, check if you have an issue with which you are trying to cope. There are better ways to cope than eating. Obesity is not the answer.
