Food is fuel, not therapy. You have all heard the term “comfort food.” This term is actually defined in Wikipedia as “Comfort food is food which provides a nostalgic or sentimental value to the consumer, and is often characterized by its high caloric nature, high carbohydrate level, and simple preparation. The nostalgia may be specific to either the individual or a specific culture.” For most of us, food is more than fuel. It like bread is more than the staff of life. When we eat, we want to enjoy the smells, the tastes, the textures, and the memories that go with eating. I remember my mother would make hash. She had an old hand crank grinder and would grind potatoes, carrots, onions, and yes Spam, mix it altogether and cook it. I would spread it out on my plate somewhat thin and make little roads in it, eating it as the fork went through it. That was more than fuel. Maybe I shouldn’t have been playing in my food, but I have fond memories of that delicious Spam hash. Haven’t had it since.
