“Don’t compromise on anything that really matters.” This quote fits the things that matter in life. However, since this is a health blog, it fits our diet efforts.
My first reaction when seeing a statement like this is “Oh no another rule I won’t be able to keep.” No one can keep all the rules all the time. Some can keep some of the rules some of the time. Well, you know what I mean. And you can take this as a rule and not keep it either.
There are some sayings, like this one, which the author did not mean as a rule but a principle to apply to life. We could say if you compromise on anything that really matters, you lose.
I’m not talking about being a peacemaker. I’m talking about deciding what is important to your health and wellbeing and refusing to allow things that try to come against what’s important. You have to decide what it important to you.
The danger, of course, is that you will make up a bunch of rules you can’t keep. If you say never eating desserts is important to me and I will never compromise on that, you will have trouble, unless you are one of those weird people who don’t like desserts.
So, it is very hard to decide on what really matters. The quote sounded very good when you first read it. Now it doesn’t sound better than making up a bunch of rules you won’t compromise on. Does that mean you will never compromise? Is it even possible to do? What really matters? All tough questions.
What on your weight loss efforts, would you never compromise? If you start it with, “I will never…” forget about it. Maybe instead of something negative, you can find something positive. I will always…drink my water, brush my teeth, eat my veggies or fruit. Still not so easy. Perhaps you can come up with one thing that really matters. Paul the Apostle said, “this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind.” (Philippians 3:13)
Maybe we could forget our failures and keep moving forward. Never look back. Always look to today. What can you do today to succeed? When it gets right down to it, very little really matters in this life. No use making up a bunch of rules you won’t keep anyway.
