One company had a Director of Consumer Behavior. This is a person who attempts to understand the decision-making processes of buyers, both individually and in groups. It studies characteristics of individual consumers such as demographics and behavioral variables in an attempt to understand people’s wants.
Typical Wikipedia definition no one can understand. It’s a person who figures out what consumers want and then attempts to change their behavior to sell the products of their company.
I like one commercial that says, “We make things you didn’t even know you wanted.” Some companies come up with a product that fills a need. Some companies come up with a product and then come up with a need for it.
I take surveys on occasion. Often one of the questions is “Is this a product you need?” That’s usually followed by, “is this a product you want?” Wants and needs are two different things. A company desires to make your wants into needs.
The diet industry is also involved in this. They know what you want—an easy fast way to lose weight. Since it’s not possible, they attempt to change your wants. It might not be fast, but you can eat anything you want. On the other hand, the fastest way to meet your goals is to eat our special cookie. You like cookies, don’t you? Then you will like our diet.
There are many people out there with their eyes on your behavior as a consumer. Some people will write companies and tell them they like or don’t like something. Others like me decide if I need something or not.
You are the director of your consumer behavior. You decide and you tell what you want and don’t want by buying the product or not. It’s your choice.
