We have to renew our minds to correct behavior. God loves us totally apart from our behavior. However, He provides the Word to point us to the way to succeed in life. Dieting requires a change in behavior. Behavior is simply the manner of conducting oneself. If we are going for a Twinkie to get relief from life’s challenges, then we have to change that behavior to something that helps rather than hurts the situation.
We need to make some behavioral modification. We need to stop trying it the world’s way and do it God’s way. We have to tap into God’s grace to overcome. God’s grace is sufficient. The world’s way relies on will power, following strict diet guidelines, mediation, exercising until you are blue in the face, and spending gobs of money.
However, God must have a way. I’ve read a number of Christian diet books. I don’t see much difference. Perhaps one thing is always the same. To lose weight, you have to use more calories than you take in. That is a given. I don’t mean simply calories in verses calories out. Things are more complicated than that.
Okay the use of calories is a given. We need help in overcoming the body’s defenses that God created to eat the correct amount of food. Because in order to lose weight we either have to eat less or exercise more or both. These things trigger defense mechanisms that alert us to potentially harmful issues. We need grace to overcome those defense mechanisms. Hunger, fatigue, lack of focus, and other issues rise when you eat less than it takes to maintain. We need grace and wisdom to overcome in a healthy manner.
Because of these built-in defense mechanisms, it pushes our mental faculties more than normal. The brain is saying it has sensed that we aren’t getting enough calories so we need to eat. However, we don’t want to eat more. It’s a mental fight. Here is where we renew the mind. Here is where we learn more that life is more than bread. This is where the world’s ways and God’s ways separate. Our reason for dieting is different. Our goal is different. This is where we overcome or are overcome.
