The last couple of Sundays we have been looking at how God can help us in our dieting. I choose Sundays because we are more accustomed to Bible study on Sundays. If you recall, first we had to ask. You only get if you ask. Second, we don’t want to ask amiss. Today we are asking according to God’s will.
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.” (1 John 5:14)
This one verse has caused many problems in the Christian community. People will often add it to prayer, “If it be your will…” I think it negates faith. It’s saying I don’t know what your will is.
John says we can have confidence in our asking. We know we don’t want to ask amiss. Now we just need to ask according to what God’s will might be in the matter.
God’s Word is His will. What does the word say about what you want to ask? Does God want you healthy? Jesus spent a great deal of His time healing. In third John, we hear God say He wants us healthy and prosperous in body, mind, and soul.
Does He want to help us get healthy? Yes. Asking God to help us in our weight loss journey is asking according to His will. So we have confidence to ask knowing He will hear us. “And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” (1 John 5:15)
We have the confidence that is we ask for help in our diet program, then we know He will do it for us. If we read the Word and study it, we will know God’s will.
Billy Graham said that, “The will of God will not take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us.” Grace covers a multitude of asking for the wrong thing.
We will talk about the faith part next Sunday.
