“Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages combine with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.” Metabolism is a very complicated system of many factors. These functions go on all the time and even when resting your body needs energy for many life support functions such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, growing, and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate — what you might call metabolism. Though metabolism can’t be blamed for weight gain, it does play a part. Most people’s metabolism is a fixed thing. It runs at its own rate. Trying to adjust it through exercise or activity may slightly change it but for the most part it runs on autopilot. Many of the Biggest Loser contestants have caused harm to the processes when forcing their body functions to stress beyond reasonably limits. The result is damage to the processes and more difficulty in weight loss issues. So don’t mess with the metabolism.
