Continuing today with another fad diet slogan. These are tips to help you in analyzing a diet or product.
5. “Rapid weight loss: Lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks!”
This is common among the weight loss companies. The biggest thing overweight people want is fast weight loss. Just get it off as quickly as possible.
Many people are just looking to lose weight rapidly for their high school reunion or wedding. They need a smaller amount off quickly. I have seen Biggest Loser contestants lose 20 to 30 pounds in the first week. It’s possible to lose 20 pounds in two weeks.
But you say it’s mostly water weight. Weight is weight. If you have excess water in your body, then you need to lose it. I have read diet gurus who insist that losing fast is healthy because it gets the weight off the body faster and gives the body a quicker chance to recover from the excess weight.
Others say, “A weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week is the safest and most effective way to take-off weight and keep it off.”
From my observation, some diets will get the initial 10 pounds off in the first couple of weeks. Then it’s 1 to 2 pounds per week for the average person. It just doesn’t come off fast for most people. If you dedicate yourself to losing weight like at a ranch where you spend many hours a day exercising, you could see larger amounts.
I don’t think there are products that can help you with large losses. I’ve seen things such as body wraps advertise large weight losses. I don’t believe it. You can’t dissolve fat or remove it without using it and that takes time. The exception, of course, is surgery.
Many products and diet plans say rapid weight loss, but can they sustain it? Is the diet so strict you will hate it in a week?
Though we want rapid weight loss, the reality is that any weight loss will make us happy.
